Choose the Narrow Road

Based on Matthew 7:13–14

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

The road. The call of the road. All of humanity is on this journey at somewhat different times, with some intersecting for a time along the road. Many go alone. Some are on the road for just a time. Others have a much longer time on it. But all are on the road.

So, which road do you take? The one that’s not so obvious. The one that the sweep of humanity bypasses. The road less taken. The one with the narrow gate that only has one way to enter.

Or, do you take the big road down which the detritus of life flows, the flotsam and jetsam of humanity in never-ending parade?

In the river of life, there are small unclogged tributaries that support incredible life, that are pristine sanctuaries for all manner of growth. But in the flood of the river comes every type of thing, from dead trees and large structures to toxic chemicals and waste. Those swept in the flood are carried to certain death.

Jesus points the way to life in this Scripture. It is him, for he is the way, the truth and the life.

The Christian life is not overwhelming. It is not impossibly difficult. It is just not consistent with the cultural “flood.” It is contrarian to human sense. The sin nature within man desires the broad road, the flood, the expanse of humanity, to “go with the flow.” But this is not the call of Christ. Come with me, for I will make you fishers of men. I’ll change who you are, no matter who you are, into something miraculous – my disciple. I choose you to take up my yoke, which is easy compared to others, and to follow me to life! But, it’s not without it’s challenges, it’s just worth it. It’s not that you will have nothing to do or that you will not be opposed. You will have plenty to do and an enemy will oppose you at every turn. However, what you will do will last forever, will have eternal significance, and the enemy you oppose is he who is the source of all evil in the world. You will be fighting on the side of good and justice and truth and life. It is the narrow road. It is the Way. And it is only available through Jesus Christ.
